The Narwhal is one of the most northerly of all cetaceans, living in waters near the Arctic circle and rarely venturing any further south. Despite this isolation, it has been heavily hunted in the past, both for its distinctive tusk and for its meat. The current population is probably between 25,000 and 45,000.
